Family and Divorce Mediation

What is Mediation?

Mediation is a conflict resolution approach that seeks to maintain and/or enhance relationships between disputing parties. Mediation is not therapy, but it can be healing. It is particularly well-suited for working with families. Mediation can be extremely effective even in very high conflict situations.

Family Mediation

Families do not need to be experiencing divorce for mediation to be appropriate. Mediation is based on establishing win/win outcomes and deepening understanding between parties in conflict. Disputing parties are empowered to resolve their own problems with the help of a neutral third party known as a mediator. The mediator creates a safe and neutral environment in which family members tell their stories, define their problems, and collaboratively solve them.

Family mediation is appropriate anytime there is a conflict that may impact the quality of life within a family. Such issues may include teen/parent problems, divorce and separation, parenting and co-parenting, eldercare, and transitions involving the buying and selling of real estate.

Divorce Mediation

In Colorado, divorcing couples are almost always ordered to mediate disputes for two hours as a part of the divorce process. They can also choose to mediate their entire divorce. Even when mediating an entire divorce, one can still have their attorney review all agreements before finalizing them. Amani clients can also choose to have their divorce co-mediated.
